Photo Studio
Dr. Jim Fondriest and Dr. J.A. Reynolds fully equipped the Institute
with professional photographic studio equipment in time for the May 2010
Aesthetics 1 (A1) class. The “studio” is portable and was
assembled in the second floor Clinic during A1, where Drs. Fondriest and
Reynolds guided students in learning more about photography as they
recorded
their “trial smiles.”
The Institute is deeply grateful for their generous gift and
investment in our educational program. The studio equipment will be used
by students in the Essentials and Aesthetics series, as well as in
other courses involving photography.
One of our international students, Dr. Dave Swart of South Africa,
wrote that following A1, he purchased a camera that Drs. Fondriest and
Reynolds recommended and immediately put what he learned in A1 to use
photographing a veneer case.

We Remember Dr. Parker Eugene Mahan
Or esteemed colleague and friend passed away on August 1st,
2010. To many of us Dr. Parker E. Mahan was the most
intelligent man we ever knew but he also was the epitome of a teacher,
friend, and professional colleague.
Dr. Mahan joined the UF College of Dentistry in 1971 as the founding
chairman of the department of Basic Dental Sciences. His research
interests focused on the Temporomandibular Joint, its anatomy and
physiology and its basis in all areas of dental practice. In 1984 the
Dental Occlusion and Facial Pain Center was opened with Dr. Mahan as its
director. In 1989, Dr. Mahan was named Distinguished Service Professor.
In 1992, he retired as Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, at
which time the Facial Pain Center was renamed the Parker E Mahan Facial
Pain Center. In 2008, the Parker E. Mahan Endowed Professorship was
founded along with the Parker E Mahan Endowed Fellowship.
How to Fly Above the Profit Line in Your Dental Business
by Karen Cortell Reisman, M. S.
Last week I met with Gary Kelly – the CEO of Southwest Airlines. He
spoke to our group – the CEO Club about Southwest’s flight plan, so to
speak.
Southwest Airlines (SWA) has had 37 years of profitability, even with a
doubling of fuel costs. Here’s why: People first, low cost, great
service.
People First
SWA puts their people first. Who are their most important
customers? SWA EMPLOYEES. Gary said, “If your employees are not
happy, then the customers who use your services will not be happy. You
HAVE to have a team that is thrilled to be working with you.” The SWA
culture is wrapped around this principle. Employees are recognized via
awards, banquets, parties, certificates AND EMPOWERMENT. Everybody at
SWA has the power to make suggestions, make changes, and have fun.
I have been a practicing dentist since 1982 and a “Pankey Dentist” since
2004. I finished the final continuum course in 2008 and
yes, I always found a way to sit in the same chair for each and every
course in that special conference room with all those grandiose pictures
of previous directors and restorative Gurus of our time.
My post grad educational experiences have been rich, fulfilling and most
importantly applicable. I have listened to or read a considerable
number of the great restorative dentists which we are blessed to have
amongst us. I have been a study club director of a nationally recognized
organization where I interviewed, hired and scheduled nationally known
speakers. Through this I gleaned things about them and their dreams for
the future of dentistry in ways I could never have imagined being privy
to. In addition, I have also worked with a number of dental consultants
over the years. All that said, there is still no place like home,
and for me, home has become The Pankey Institute.
Our Response
Five Considerations in Down Markets
By Richard A. Green, DDS, MBA
The world and our country abound with stories of the ups and downs of
markets in these last few years with not many signs of a strong turn
around appearing in the near future. Many micro-economic climates
have appeared within regions, states, counties, and towns. Here
are five critical considerations for leadership in times like these;
conditions like this have happened before and they will happen again. We
are not always in control of all the circumstances in our lives but we
are in control of our Response!
